Vietnamese Cabbage Salad

'Tis the season for sweaters, scarves, merriment and cabbage. Yes, cabbage. The rotund, boring relative of the cruciferous family. Snubbed by children and adults alike and often found banished at the end of the dinner buffet with the other side dishes. Always a bridesmaid never a bride. Well today is your time to shine, cabbage. Time to take center stage dressed in lime, ginger, garlic and fresh herbs. Welcome to flavor country! If you, dear readers, like a good kick in the taste buds, you will love this. I made this after my cousin, Margaret, took me to Number One Pho in Cleveland last October. The place is fantastic. We both went nuts for their cabbage salad so I promised her I would duplicate it in my kitchen so she could make it at home. Enjoy!

Vietnamese Cabbage Salad
Makes 2 servings

Salad
4 cups shredded green cabbage
1 cup shredded purple cabbage or additional green cabbage
1/4 cup sliced chives or scallions
1/4 cup chopped cilantro

Dressing
1/4 cup lime juice
2 tablespoons brown rice vinegar
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon palm sugar or agave nectar
1/2 tablespoon ginger, grated
1/2 teaspoon garlic, crushed
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/8 teaspoon cayenne

2 tablespoons crushed wild jungle peanuts* or roasted peanuts

Step 1 Combine salad ingredients in a medium size bowl.

Step 2 Whisk all dressing ingredients in a small bowl and pour over salad. Toss well and garnish with crushed peanuts.

*Wild jungle peanuts are raw peanuts from the Amazon jungle that do not contain Aflatoxin, a carcinogenic toxin produced by fungus found in common peanuts. You can find them at some health food stores and online.

Blessed Herbs Internal Cleanse

A couple months ago I embarked on a cleanse I've never tried before. I've been a big fan of the Blessed Herbs Colon Cleanse for a couple of years so I decided to try their ultra cleansing program, the Internal Cleansing Kit. It's a 3 week program that addresses all the major organs, utilizing a combination of herbal capsules and tinctures. It includes lung, kidney, blood, lymph, skin, colon and liver supporting herbs as well as 3 different parasite formulas. While on the cleanse, it's helpful to eat a light raw diet (juicing is ideal) but you may eat your normal diet if you want though results may be less noticeable. I ate raw, but, only half as much as I usually do in a day: basically a small smoothie and a light, low fat, salad. My cleanse was 5 weeks as I did a one week all raw pre-cleanse, the 3 week cleanse followed by an additional one week colon cleanse.

Everyone who knew I was on a cleanse asked, "Aren't you clean enough? You've been raw for three years." Well yes, and no. I did get clean changing from an Atkins diet to an organic, raw, vegan diet but after a while you accumulate other toxins. From the air, water, beauty products (I have a few vices...such as my hair products) and from life in general, especially urban living . Originally, I discovered the raw diet while looking for a natural solution to my acne. It ended up clearing up my skin as well as changing the complete course of my life, but I won't get into that now. Thing is, the past several weeks I started breaking out again and for someone who spends a lot of time in front of the camera, this was completely unacceptable. My body was telling me (just as it did 3 1/2 years ago) that it was out of balance. From studying David Wolfe, Donna Gates and Truth Caulkins, I learned the main issues were poor gut flora/digestion, excess estrogen and an overburdened liver. So in addition to taking all the Internal Cleanse herbs I also took New Chapter Probiotic Immunity 4 times a day (upon rising, before lunch, dinner and before bed) and New Chapter WholeMega fish oil 2 times a day (which helps remove excess estrogen). I also cut out foods that could cause hormonal imbalance:

Soy - contains phytoestrogens
Flax - contains phytoestrogens
Cacao - mimics sex hormones (it's arguable if it actually causes breakouts but I eliminated it just in case)
Caffeine (I like tea) - affects stress hormones which shuts down DHEA production, the mother hormone of all sex hormones

As soon as I started the Internal Cleanse my skin got very oily and started breaking out with cystic type acne on my chin, forehead, back and chest. It could have been a coincidence since it was around the time of my period but I also got a cold sore which is rare for me (usually only when I'm stressed or in very cold environments). I felt moody and sick for the first 4 days and then started feeling amazing. By the end of the cleanse I had lost 5 pounds (that's a lot as I'm 5'7" and went from 115 to 110) and I've been getting lots of compliments on my glowing skin. It's not perfect, still some little pimples here and there, but I've been using the Isun blemish products with great results.

I had to order an additional parasite kit from Blessed Herbs after I was done. It's recommended to do a parasite cleanse 3 times with 3 weeks in between to truly eradicate any critters. I'm continuing to take liver herbs (from New Chapter) until the end of the year and probiotics and Wholemega indefinitely. I'm also going to do an additional 10 day cleanse in a few days to see if I can truly eliminate my skin problems and help reduce cellulite that had shown up out of nowhere 2 years ago. I just bought a far infrared sauna to help my detox program and am so excited to see how much better my results will be. I plan on blogging my results so check back to see how I did.

For those interested in trying the Blessed Herbs kits, I highly recommend them (FYI, I don't work for them). I wait until they have sales to stock up which happen about 2-3 times a year. Sign up for their emails and you'll be the first to know when they're on sale. Good luck!

Watermelon and Heirloom Tomato Gazpacho

The early autumn continues to bring us gorgeous watermelons and heirloom tomatoes in southern California. The perfect ingredients to create a soup that is as tasty as it is healing. Perfect if you're on a raw food cleanse. It's very high in cancer preventing lycopene and the flavor is simply fantastic. I taught this at my Brooklyn Kitchen classes and everyone raved about how much they loved it. If you're cleansing you can skip the sea salt and if you want a richer soup add a tablespoon or two of good quality extra virgin olive oil to the base.

Watermelon and Heirloom Tomato Gazpacho

Makes 6-8 servings

Base
4 cups watermelon, chopped
1 small red heirloom or Roma tomato, seeded, chopped
2 tablespoons fresh spearmint
2 tablespoons fresh basil
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
1 small clove garlic
1/2 teaspoon sea salt

Add ins
1 1/2 cups multi colored heirloom or Roma tomatoes, seeded, diced
1 1/2 cups watermelon, diced
1 cucumber, peeled, seeded, diced
1/2 cup white onions, diced

Place 4 cups of the watermelon in a blender along with the tomato, spearmint, basil, lime juice, vinegar, garlic and sea salt and blend until smooth.

Transfer the puree to a large bowl. Add diced tomatoes, watermelon cucumbers and onions and stir to combine.

Chill for 1-2 hours before serving.

Will last two days in the refrigerator.

ISUN Product Review

Like many women in their 30's, I am forever on the hunt for new and better facial products to help correct my previous two decades of poor lifestyle and dietary choices. My SPF free years of my youth are haunting me in a way that no amount of green juice or raw food is going to help. I need some serious skincare. I've actually been a really big fan of DeVita products for the past three years but find that it's just not emollient enough for living in the dryness of southern California. I recently stumbled upon ISUN, an all natural, organic, ethical, eco friendly, wildcrafted line of skincare. I was overwhelmed with the amount of products in their line so I decided to just start out with one of their introductory packs to see what it was all about. Since I have acne prone skin I ordered the Blemished Skin Care set that comes with a cleanser, toner mist, clarifying serum, spot treatment, neem and blue green masks and an exfoliant. They even threw in a bonus lip balm (which is my favorite lip balm EVER now).

I have to say this is the most effective acne skincare product I've ever tried. It has antimicrobial and deep poor cleansing that doesn't dry your skin out like other acne kits. The star of the show is the clarifying serum that contains essential oils, neem, MSM and salicylic acid (from willow bark) that gently exfoliates without the harsh dryness. The spot treatment is very effective too as is the neem mask. I have really sensitive skin so I like that I can keep it on long enough without the itchiness I get from other masks. The only thing I would have liked in this set was a sample of the moisturizer of which there are about a dozen to choose from. I'm currently using Dr. Alkaitis for night time moisturizing but when I run out I'll try one from ISUN. You can find the products at Living Earth Beauty which also features some other really great brands of natural beauty products including products from Living Libations which create my favorite tooth product, Yogi Tooth Serum. Right now they have free shipping on all orders over $99 so get on it!

Summer Detox

Since I spent the first half of the year writing my book, I didn't have the time to do my usual maintenance juice fasts or cleanses. Now that I have some downtime I figured it's time to do some late spring cleaning. Thing is, I still had to work on new recipes so I needed something less painful than a juice fast. I had bought the book "Clean" by Dr. Junger and thought that might be a doable program to follow while I continue working in the kitchen. The basic plan is as follows:

Breakfast: smoothie
Lunch: raw or cooked meal
Dinner: smoothie
Portions should be small (2 cups for smoothies) avoiding nightshades and allowing at least 12 hours between dinner and the following breakfast.

This was not that much different than what I already ate so I decided to follow the plan completely raw and see how it goes. After 6 days I didn't feel or see results. I guess I believe there has to be a certain degree of torture for it to be a successful detox. I've been raw for 3 years so this wasn't much of a challenge except for the portions were smaller and I couldn't have tomatoes. This would be an excellent plan for someone coming from the Standard American Diet though. The book has great information about why to detox and the plan is simple to follow. It allows one cooked meal a day if you choose and that includes some animal products.

I wanted to continue my cleanse so I modified it by skipping the lunch meal and instead having:
-1 quart fruit based green smoothie with superfoods and 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil or tahini paste for the first half of the day
-1 quart vegetable green smoothie with 1/2 avocado for the second half of the day.

I can't believe I hadn't tried this before. I feel amazing and yet I can tell I'm detoxing. My sense of smell always becomes more acute when I detox. I also start to breakout and this time around I had the unpleasantness of hives on my upper chest, thighs and around my temples. Thankfully it was only temporary. I've had loads of energy which is what I needed, not a detox that makes me crabby and fatigued. I've been able to workout as well but I do get crazy cravings. Often for food I haven't eaten in ages like In n Out burgers. I have 5 days to go but I think I can go much longer. With the summer heat and the abundance of local produce this is a plan I could follow for a while.

Has anyone else tried a smoothie cleanse? How were your results? I've done Frederick Patneaude's smoothie cleanse but it excluded fats and salt all together. THAT was hard. That little bit of fat is the difference between me being hungry in 3 to 4 hours or starving in 1 hour. I've only been using a pinch of salt in my one smoothie. I've lost a lot of water weight and my arms look toned again just by cutting down the sodium.

If anyone feels like trying this plan let me know your results. I'd love to hear your experience with it. If you're looking for a good book on detox plans I also highly recommend checking out "Raw Food Cleanse" by Penni Shelton. Do you have a favorite detox book? Let me know!

Book Update

For those who haven't heard, I have spent the last 6 months writing a raw food recipe book for Quarry Books coming out next spring. I am proud to say I have just submitted my 100+ recipes and 40,000+ words on how to make some of the best food on Earth. I'm not sure if I'm at liberty to announce the title yet but I can say the first layout and cover look awesome so far. It's the recipe book I wish I had when I went raw and I think will become the go-to book for those looking to go all raw or just wanting to add healthy fare to their everyday diets. It's fully illustrated with step by step photos thanks to my very talented husband, Matt. I can't wait to share it with all of you. Right now I'll be spending the rest of the month doing a little editing but I'm looking forward to having more time to blog, make videos and teach classes as well as catch up on some reading and songwriting.

Hope everyone is having a great summer so far!

NYC Icy

On my recent trip to NYC my good friend introduced me to NYC Icy, a legendary Italian ice-type dessert shop which had recently returned after a two year absence. Located in the east village on Avenue A between 6th and 7th street, NYC Icy offers unique flavors like mango-basil (so good), apricot-ginger, rice pudding, earl gray (wow) and chocolate-bacon (3 years ago I would have said yes) as well as classics like chocolate chip and fruit flavors.

What makes this so amazing is how true the flavors are. I had the grapefruit and it tasted exactly like the real thing but in shaved ice form. The owners say they use all natural ingredients and flavors (except for cotton candy) for all of their ices. Their lips were sealed on what exactly goes into them so I don't know what it's sweetened with but I like that they're not overly sweet. Their traditional ices are vegan but they also have cream ices which is similar to a light gelato.

Over the weekend I tried the grapefruit, lemon, pear, earl gray, purple carrot and mango-lime and fell in love with all of them. Definitely looking forward to coming back to NYC later this summer and trying some of their other 200 flavors.

Me vs. the fruit flies

Three years as a raw foodist and avid fruit eater, I've never had a problem with fruit flies until this past week. While I was out of town they infested my kitchen including sneaking into my fermentation crock and spoiling my sauerkraut. These wily little flies refused to leave with the garbage, finding refuge in a bouquet of flowers which I sadly had to take to the trash as well. Still, they hung around, so I went online to find a solution and discovered two simple methods.

Fly trap #1

In a small bowl add apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dishwashing liquid and leave at the source uncovered.

Fly trap #2

Fill a jar with a small amount of apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dishwashing liquid. Cover jar with plastic wrap and poke a few holes in it.

Fly trap #2 was supposed to be more effective, according to the website I found, but #1 worked much better. By the next morning only a couple rogue flies remained while the rest had drowned. The apple cider vinegar smells like rotting fruit, attracting the flies, while the dish soap breaks the surface tension so that when flies come to sit on the surface of the liquid they get sucked in.

Hope this is helpful to anyone else who is battling flies, especially with summer just around the corner and more fruit coming into season. I apologize for anyone who might be offended by the killing of fruit flies. I did give them a couple chances to leave on their own and anyone who ruins my sauerkraut is pretty much asking for war.

Anyone else have a better solution?

The Elusive Cadbury Egg

For the past two years, Pure Juice & Takeaway in NYC has been carrying raw vegan Cadbury cream eggs around Easter time. Last year I missed out on them but this year I was lucky enough to be around to nab one for myself. Thought I'd share the experience since so many have read about it from Sarma's tweets and were probably curious as to what they were. The chocolate was smooth and dark and the center was a luscious coconut cream base. I couldn't figure out the yolk though. Turmeric? Mango? Whatever it was, it was delicious. My only complaint is that I wish it was bigger. Mmmmm...

Quarrygirl Goes Raw

The hilarious, potty mouthed and brutally honest vegan blogger, Quarrygirl, recently took a plunge into the world of raw foods. Quite surprising after her terrible experience at Pure Food & Wine on a recent NYC trip. Read here about some of the culinary delights she enjoyed on her one week raw trial. Would love to read a follow up post to see if she felt any of the health benefits.

Quar, we have a date with a raw pizza very soon!

My Husband's Rant About the Dental Industry

My husband wrote a really funny story about tooth health for the Long Beach District Weekly. Unfortunately, they folded this week so the story is on his music/photography blog. It delights me to no end that he has gotten so into healthy eating and living. If his photography career ever goes under, he'd be a great holistic educator...or comedy writer.

P.S. if you like his blog become a follower!

Natural Products Expo West

Last Friday I attended the largest natural products trade show in the world. Expo West has everything from beauty products to supplements to food in addition to suppliers who can sell you the ingredients for whatever natural product you want to create. I went in search of culinary inspiration and to see what was on the horizon for this foodie.

I was very excited to run into the amazing Gabrielle Brick who is launching her new chocolate product, Avatar Elements. Made of all Ultimate Superfoods ingredients, I tasted every flavor and completely fell in love with Fire. A hot and spicy chocolate spread with turmeric undertones. I need to get my hands on a jar of this ASAP.

I also ran into the very lovely, Annmarie Gianni who is launching her new skin line, Annmarie. Her products are handmade, completely natural and left my dishpan hands soft and hydrated. I got a sample of her anti-aging serum and totally love it. Perfect if you live in the desert like I do and have problems with fine lines.

I met the legendary Juiceman, Jay Kordich, who made me a refreshing carrot spinach apple juice. Just what I needed for all my walking around.

Big Tree Farms is the raw food community's saving grace. Focused on growing sustainable, organic foods, they are one of only a handful of companies producing truly raw products like cashews and cacao. I'm thrilled about their coconut palm nectar which I am anxious to get my hands on. Finally a liquid sweetener to replace the controversial agave syrup.

Their raw cashews were unbelievably delicious and crunchy. They had some coated with chocolate nibs and palm sugar that were so crunchy I could not believe weren't roasted. I'm going to attempt to recreate it in my kitchen this week and I'll let you know if I'm at all successful.

The sweet and lovely, Julie Morris, was on hand to blend up superfood smoothies at the Navitas Naturals booth. One of my favorite lines of superhero superfood. They are coming out with raw nori sheets, powdered wheatgrass and raw camu powder so keep an eye out!

The Two Moms in the Raw were there launching their new granola bars. So cute!

There were samples galore everywhere I turned. I had some very healthful things...

...and some not so healthful. Hey, it was from Follow Your Heart and I only had a bite. I figured this was my chance to try things I would never buy, so why not. When in Rome, right?

I came home with a ridiculous amount of samples. I picked out the raw goodies and left the rest for my snackmaster husband. I spent six hours at the expo and just scratched the surface of what was out there. I wish I had more time to explore but then I'd probably have the worst stomach ache ever. Definitely good fun and looking forward to next year's expo.

Flush It If You Love It

A couple weeks ago I embarked on a five day liver flush that, because I had less than stellar results, I was hesitant to share with all of you. After giving it some thought, I feel like I should let you know how it went because it could help some of you out there. Or maybe some of you could help me figure out what went wrong. First off, let's address what it means to flush the liver and why in God's name would we do such a thing. Believe me, last week when I was on the bathroom floor giving myself a coffee enema, I was thinking "Why am I doing this?" We'll get back to that in a moment.

Our liver performs over 1000 different functions and considered by many holistic practitioners to be the fountain of youth. When we abuse our liver with alcohol, drugs, poor diet and a toxic environment we age faster. Ever seen Keith Richards? Enough said. As we age we accumulate small fat stones in our bile ducts that make it more difficult for a our livers to function optimally. If we leave these stones to grow they eventually move into our gallbladder where they become gallstones. A liver flush is basically a way to detoxify the liver by cleaning out the congested bile ducts that make up the organ.

People who have done a series of flushes reported clearing up of acne, allergies, back pain, improved digestion, and an increase in energy. I've done five of them in the past five years and have followed Dr. Hulda Clark's protocol. I had a live blood cell analysis a couple months ago and was told to do a series of 6 flushes after signs that my liver was not cleaning my blood the way it should. I purchased a liver flush kit from www.loveyourliver.org. It was much more elaborate than Dr. Clark's and I was assured that it was going to have even better results. The kit contained the following:

Castor oil, cotton flannel, olive oil, hot water bottle, enema bucket, digestive enzymes, Ortho-Phos, Oxy-Mag (oxygenated magnesium), and liver support herbs. For three days prior to the flush I put a castor oil pack/hot water bottle on my liver twice a day for one hour. This was actually my favorite part of the cleanse. The hot water bottle felt really good and I fell so in love with it I started sleeping with it and threatened my husband that if he didn't shape up I could easily replace him (I kid, I kid). Castor oil contains ricinoleic acid which is a potent immune booster. It reduces inflammation, opens the bowels, liver/gallbladder ducts and increases elimination. It detoxifies the body and inhibits fungal, yeast, molds and tumorous growths. Beware if you fall asleep with your hot water bottle that the top is tightly closed. I, unfortunately, woke up in a puddle of water one night. Major bummer.

Three times a day I drank the Oxy-Mag combined with water and lemon juice. This wasn't too bad but it will make you pretty gassy. The Oxy-Mag oxygenates the gastrointestinal tract and breaks down, detoxifies and eliminates waste material. It opens up the digestive tract and gets things moving. After the Oxy-Mag, I would take the Ortho-Phos with apple cider vinegar. This was extremely astringent for me to drink. I felt like the enamel on my teeth and my entire esophagus was getting stripped. I drank water in between gulps of this concoction but it was still very difficult for me to finish. Yet, I pressed on because this was what was softening the stones in my liver and getting me ready for the big day. I also ate a little less than I usually did. Mostly blended foods and I cut down on my fats.

On the day of the flush, I ate no fat whatsover (just some fruit), did my castor oil pack, drank the Oxy-Mag, Ortho-Phos and at 1pm drank one cup of olive oil with one cup of lemon juice. It was rough but I did it. Nauseous, I quickly laid down for over an hour on my side with my castor pack. Then, following their directions, administered my very first coffee enema. I've had colonics before but this was way more awkward. I laid on my yoga mat and bashfully put a bucket full of Costa Rica's best coffee where the sun doesn't shine. I hadn't had that much coffee in me since I went raw almost three years ago. Within two minutes I had a caffeine jolt that made my heart race faster than my ecstasy filled raver days. Holy moly! I went back to bed but I was so alert and antsy I couldn't just lay there and fall asleep. I read, worked on my laptop and then to my dismay got overwhelmingly nauseous again. I felt really off but all I could do was lay on the couch and wait patiently for the flush to happen. Well, sadly nothing ever happened. I had a cup of peppermint tea and another dose of Oxy-Mag that night and then the following morning. To my dismay, no stones ever appeared. I drank 2000 calories of pure fat, gave myself an enema and passed up a free ticket to see one of my favorite bands, Spoon, play so that I could give my liver the love it deserved. I was really bummed.

Every time I followed Dr. Hulda Clark's regimen I had great results so this was very disappointing. I'm sure the folks at loveyourliver.org have gotten great results with their clients or else they would not sell this kit so I'm not sure why it didn't work for me. What I'd like to do next time is follow their three day pre-flush but follow Hulda Clark's flush which uses Epsom salts and 1/2 cup of olive oil/grapefruit juice right before going to bed. I'm going to try the flush during one of the next new moons (yes, the new moon is a great time to flush) and hopefully will have more 'fruitful' results. Check out Hulda Clark's site for her liver cleanse kit. Flushing the liver has helped thousands of people and may possibly take your health to the next level. Flush it if you love it!

The Latest News

Has it been over a week since I last posted? So much for my New Year's resolutions. I was determined to post twice a week but somehow, amid everything, the blog got neglected yet again. Actually my journal hasn't had an entry since April 2009 so it could be worse. The thing is, I have been truly busy with all things raw and more than just the blog is falling to the wayside. My holistic nutrition studies, my music, my social life are all on temporary hold. I have recently been offered a book deal to write a raw food recipe book with a really great publisher. I've been working on recipes for some time but now that I have deadlines and high expectations my time is spent either in the kitchen or on my laptop researching and writing. It's been amazing so far and it's exciting to see it already taking shape. I'm making the book that I wanted when I first went raw, a book for the uninitiated and intimidated. My dream is to see raw foods become mainstream, so this is my labor of love to get the information out in a way that makes sense and is easy to follow. It's also the main reason I haven't posted new recipes or photos on the blog or website. I'm saving them for the book but I'll probably be able to spare a few here and there, especially come summer time.

Just an FYI that I recently started a YouTube channel that is going to feature a variety of lifestyle and raw related topics. I'm currently shooting my ex-supermodel brother-in-law's 30 day raw food journey (he's in his boxers, you don't want to miss that one!) and I'm going to show you how I trained my cat to use the toilet. There will be some product reviews, food demos and much more. Once the book is completed I'll have more time to work on the videos so check back regularly for updates.

Other things on the agenda: another trip to Costa Rica in February, Longevity conference with David Wolfe in March and Coachella in April. If anyone is going my way let me know!

xoxo

Raw on $10 a Day (or less)

I often hear people complain that a raw food diet is too expensive to follow and I admit if you only eat at raw food restaurants or eat prepackaged raw treats it will probably break your budget. Check out Lisa and her clever blog on how to eat raw on the cheap. Each post features a menu, recipe instructions, amazing photos (see above *drool*), nutrition facts and how much each item costs. Her recipes are as unique as they are delicious and all under $10. Now, no more excuses. Well done, Lisa!

Shaman Shack Herbs

I first learned about the Shaman Shack when I was at the Longevity Now weekender a couple months ago. Founder, Rehmannia Dean Thomas, is an expert on tonic herbs and has taught David Wolfe all he knows. I went ahead and purchased several of his herbal formulas so I can have the superherb experience David Wolfe talks about in his program. There are several different formulas depending on what your needs are. I started off with making the Protection tea which is a mushroom/root mixture of agaricus, reishi, astragalus, cordyceps, scutellaria, goji berries, schizandra and licorice.

This mixture had the most beautiful smell, almost chocolate like. Heaven. I had to resist the urge to take a bite, it really was that good. To make the tea, simply soak the herbs in a glass, clay or stainless steel pot with 1 gallon of water for 20 minutes. Bring to boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer for 1 hour.

Strain tea into a pitcher and save herbs in a separate container. You can reuse the herbs 1-2 more times before discarding. The flavor of the simmered tea is pretty earthy. It's not a bad taste but if you're not a fan of mushrooms this might not be your cup of tea, pun intended. I've been drinking 2-3 cups a day to strengthen my immune system and really don't mind the flavor. Be warned, this not at all like drinking a simple bag of herbal tea. This is intense stuff that is as nurturing to body as much or more than raw foods. David Wolfe uses the teas as a base for making his super smoothies which I have yet to try. The next tea I'm planning to brew is the Cleanse Thyself formula because I will be embarking on the Love Your Liver cleanse this weekend. If you're in LA, Rehmannia is now the herbalist at Euphoria Loves Rawvolution in Santa Monica. There are very few people who have this sort of herbal wisdom so if you are in the area take advantage of the opportunity to speak with someone as knowledgeable as Rehmannia. As for the liver cleanse, I will post my results next week. See you then!

David Wolfe's Ultimate Raw Nutrition Certification

The BodyMind Institute, an online holistic education website, is offering a very informative and entertaining David Wolfe raw nutrition course. It features:

* 70 – 5-15 minute video lessons that bring you years of David Wolfe education condensed into 12 hours of ‘class’ time.
* Each ‘class’ is designed with a PDF handout.

Each PDF handout for each of the 70 video lessons will give you:

* A summary of each video.
* Notes and direct quotes from David Wolfe.
* References for the material being covered.
* Immediate resources to apply the information.
* Web links where needed.
* Stores and places to shop online.
* Assignments to take immediate action.

I just found out that new course segments will be added in throughout the year. I just completed watching all of the available videos and I have to say I absolutely loved it. If you are a holistic educator and a fan of David Wolfe I highly recommend going through the course. It's chock full of great information that you can access over and over. You will have 12 months to complete the course and will only be able to watch the videos within that time frame. I plan on watching the series over again, perhaps several times. There was so much great info, my brain couldn't absorb it all the first time around. I'll be honest and say the videos aren't the most professional looking but the content is excellent and I like being able to download the notes. This a great opportunity to see how David Wolfe lives, what he eats, drinks, reads as well as learn about current and cutting edge raw food nutrition. Topics include superfoods, superherbs, medicinal mushrooms, foraging for mushrooms and salads, making super smoothies, strengthening the immune system, and more. It's fascinating stuff.

Fact or Fiction?

While up in Yosemite this week, my husband discovered he can dowse (aka well witch) for water. I tried and tried and could not get the stick do my bidding, but for my husband it worked 100% of the time. Neither of us can understand this phenomenon. I was irritated because I was the raw foodist and should have been able to channel the energy better, right? Wrong! Where's mythbusters when you need them?
